Dr. Amy Schneider, DVM

WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATIONAL AND VETERINARY MEDICINE BACKGROUND?

I graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science in 2010. After college, I worked as a veterinary assistant at the Cat Care Clinic in Madison. I moved to the island of St. Kitt’s, West Indies in 2012 for veterinary school at Ross University and completed by clinical year at Oklahoma State University.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A VETERINARIAN?

My parents introduced me to caring for a variety of different pets at a young age including goldfish, dogs, cats, gerbils, rabbits, chickens, sheep, goats and miniature donkeys. These experiences have grown my passion for wanting to help animals. This together with my strong interest in science contributed to my love for veterinary medicine.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT AS A VET?

My many “firsts” at Crawford Animal Hospital have been quite memorable, including my first cystotomy, first urethral obstruction, first abdominal exploratory surgery, and first pyometra. An especially memorable case was a young male cat from Happy Endings No Kill Cat Shelter who came into the clinic for urethral obstruction. I placed a urinary catheter to unblock him and managed his case for a week. After that week, I took him to my home for medical monitoring. Long story short, he is still with me living happily as a “foster failure.”

WHAT ARE THE BEST THINGS YOU FIND ABOUT BEING A VETERINARIAN?

I enjoy the opportunity to help so many pets and their families every day. Building relationships with patients and clients is important and enjoyable for me.

WHAT ARE YOUR SPECIAL INTERESTS IN THE FIELD OF VETERINARY MEDICINE?

Preventative medicine, feline medicine, soft tissue surgery, and wound management.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL PET YOU HAVE HELPED TREAT?

Rodeo bucking bulls in Oklahoma, and a pot-bellied pig with foreign body obstructions that resulted from ingesting seven boxes’ worth of Thin Mint cookies and wrappers.
