Orthopedic Surgery

Whether you’re a pet owner or a general practice veterinarian, if you have an animal that needs an orthopedic procedure, our hospital can accommodate your needs. We work with a traveling, board-certified cat and dog orthopedic surgeon who visits Greenfield once a week to perform orthopedic surgeries. They have served as a vet for roughly 20 years, and have been board-certified in orthopedic surgery since 2007. They bring a wealth of experience to the table and work closely with our team to make sure every pet receives exceptional care.

PREPARING YOUR PET FOR THEIR ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY

Like any other type of surgery, cat and dog orthopedic surgery requires plenty of preparation to maximize patient safety and recovery.

PRE-ANESTHETIC EXAM AND BLOODWORK

Anesthesia can be risky for pets, but with a pre-anesthetic exam and bloodwork, we can assess your companion’s health and design a custom anesthesia protocol to enhance their safety

ADMINISTERING THE NECESSARY MEDICATION

To increase your pet’s comfort and help them recover more smoothly after their surgery, we pre-medicate with pain management and antibiotics as needed.

IV CATHETER PLACEMENT

An IV catheter port allows our team to provide your pet with any fluids and medications they might need during surgery to support their vitals and further reduce surgery complications.

MONITORING

Our surgical suite uses advanced patient monitoring equipment to check your pet’s vitals constantly while they are under anesthesia. Furthermore, our dedicated veterinary technician will stay at your pet’s side to keep an eye on their vitals and make changes to their anesthesia protocol as needed.

HOW TO HELP YOUR PET RECOVER AT HOME

Orthopedic surgeries tend to be very involved for dogs and cats, often requiring at least 7-10 days of downtime and supervision. Here are several things we recommend to help your pet’s recovery go as smoothly as possible:

  • Invest in an orthopedic dog bed for your pet so they can rest comfortably while they’re healing.
  • Keep your pet’s incision site(s) clean and dry at all times to prevent infection.
  • Check your pet’s incision site(s) daily for discoloration, seepage, swelling, and odor.
  • To prevent your pet from licking or chewing at their sutures, get them an e-collar. Or, as an alternative, you can repurpose an old T-shirt or onesie into a garment for your pet that covers and protects their sutures.
  • Keep your pet confined to where they are not running and jumping, and keep them on a leash when they go outside to do their business.
  • Stay in touch with our team and let us know if there are any issues with your pet’s recovery. We will likely schedule a follow-up with you so we can assess your pet’s progress.
