★★★★★ Dr. Bookmeier does an excellent job! She cares deeply about the patients she sees and she understands how best to complete an exam when dogs have suffered abuse in the past. I cannot recommend her enough. This is a 5 star review because until the incident below, we've had nothing but great things to say. The appointment today was also extremely well handled. Thanks to management and Dr. Bookmeier, we are happy to continue coming to Crawford Animal Hospital and to recommend them to our friends.We had a pretty horrible experience with Dr. Schneider last week that ended in me having to advocate for my dog and leave in the middle of a routine wellness exam. She refused to listen to me when it came to handling my PTSD dog. She and 2 techs (who were just following orders, I don't have anything against them) crowded him into a corner, looming over him and grabbing at him and then seemed surprised that he was terrified. Rather than allowing me to hold him as I initially asked and have done for every appointment up until this point, she told me my dog needed to be medicated before coming to future appointments and that he needed a muzzle, which she was quick to have me put on him. A quick glance at notes from previous appointments with several different vets will tell you he's never had an issue before. *side note: I have no issues with muzzles, he's worn them before but he sincerely did not need one.* There was more that happened but this is already long.After this debacle, my fiancé and I spoke to Hayley, the office manager, over the phone and we were able to complete the full exam today with Dr. Bookmeier (who we've seen before and have had great experiences with). After everything, I'm impressed with the handling of the situation and the understanding from the other staff (obviously excluding Dr. Schneider). We've seen Dr. Schmitz in the past who was also wonderful. Again, I highly recommend either Dr. Bookmeier or Dr. Schmitz!**I mention my poor experience with Dr. Schneider so you can make informed decisions on which vet you see. If you have a dog who has no history of trauma or anxiety, I'm sure she's adequate. For us with our dog, who was horribly abused during the first year of his life before we adopted him, it absolutely did not work out. It was very clear to me that she was happier to dismiss me and talk down to me than to actually fully examine him in a way he was comfortable with.
