Surgery

At Crawford Animal Hospital in Greenfield, we understand your concerns about dog and cat surgery. While this is perfectly normal, we also want you to have peace of mind! Our veterinarians do not recommend surgery unless they believe it will improve the quality of life. Certain conditions, such as traumatic injury or cancerous growths, may require surgery.

Keeping our patients safe is our highest priority. The tools and techniques we utilize for pet surgeries are the most up-to-date, and designed specifically for your pet’s comfort. We know that it takes considerable trust to leave your pet in someone else’s care, especially when that care involves surgery. One of our veterinarians will be more than willing to discuss the process and let you know what to expect. Our team is highly trained and experienced in performing surgical procedures. Call (414) 529-3577 or make an appointment online!

Dog and Cat Surgery Safety and Pain Management

Before surgery, we will need to examine your pet to make sure they’re healthy and ready for their procedure. Senior pets or pets with past issues may need to undergo blood testing for further evaluation. All patients receive pre-surgery blood testing. This step enables our team to minimize safety risks when placing your pet under anesthesia. A pet that is sick will need to have their surgery postponed.

The next steps we take to ensure that your dog and cat remain safe and healthy throughout their surgery include:

  • Pre-medicating with analgesics (painkillers) and antibiotics
  • IV catheter placement to administer fluids and other medications as needed to keep your pet stable
  • Having an experienced technician monitor your pet’s vitals (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and oxygen levels) during the surgery

Pain management is extremely important because unnecessary pain can slow your pet’s recovery and affect their health. Our pain management options, which are carefully measured according to your pet’s weight, include:

  • Local anesthesia
  • Oral and injectable medications
  • Laser therapy
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS)
  • Narcotics
